alarm grades

Grade D

A mains powered smoke/heat alarm with an integral battery back up source.
This can either be loose battery or sealed in Rechargeable lithium cells.
This therefore encompasses all the fast fit Kidde Slick®  range of Alarms, and these models in the cable harness range:
& our Firex ranges.

(17th Edition Wiring Regs require that all alarms are connected on a single circuit, and has nothing other than safety devices on that circuit.)

Grade E

Mains powered but no battery back up. (KIdde no longer offers such alarms).

Grade F

Battery powered only and not compliant with Building Regulations where they apply.

Below are the LD Grades referring to a system, not a product classification.
LD refers to an automatic fire detection & alarm system intended for the protection of life IN DWELLINGS.
PD Grades refer to system grades intended for use in any type of property: these are outside the scope of the products deatiled on this website.

Type LD 1

& all rooms excluding Bathrooms, Shower rooms & toilets, where a fire may start.

LD 2

System incorporating alarms in all circulation spaces that form part of the Escape Routes, & all rooms/areas excluding Bathrooms, Shower rooms & toilets, where a high risk of fire exists to occupants.

LD 3

System installed  incorporating alarms in all circulation spaces that form part of the Escape Routes.

  • "L" Systems are for non domestic dwellings and involve Fire Panels not interconnected smoke + heat alarms
    Coverage L1 Systems

On L1 Systems, all areas of the building should be covered. It is normal not to cover the following areas:
WC's/Bathrooms unless they contain electric hand dryers
    Voids under 800mm in height
  • Coverage L2 Systems
Coverage of L2 systems depends on the vulnerability of the likely occupants and the probability of fires, ie:
    Bedrooms without supervision
Areas having a high probability of ignition ie: day accommodation, store rooms, kitchens and plant rooms
  • Where occupants are especially vulnerable due to illness, age or are unfamiliar with the building. It should be noted that L2 systems always include L3 coverage.
  • Coverage L3 Systems
In L3 systems, coverage should be provided for escape routes and any areas in which the occurrence of a fire would directly threaten escape routes. The following areas should therefore be covered:
    Corridors, passages and circulation areas
    Stairwells
    The top of vertical risers
At each level within 1.5m of an access point to a lift shaft or other vertical riser
In all rooms opening onto an escape route
